Intel 8008 Microprocessor began as a 'Computer Terminal Corporation 2200" - an Electronic Data Terminal

The first 8 bit Intel microprocessor -the 8008 was the result of designing the Computer Terminal Corporation "CTC 2200" logic into a single chip.  The CTC2200 was a successful project to design an electronic version of the 'workhorse' Teletype data terminal  of the 60/70s  - the Teletype was an all mechanical  communications terminal with hundreds of gears and levers. .  CTC contracted  Intel to design a microprocessor however the process was slow and CTC did not  use the design.The result was Intel had its first 8 bit microprocessor (8008).  See short story about the interesting origin of the 8008 at the end of this post.

We are fortunate to have this CTC 2200 in our computer collection and on display in the museum.

CTC's TTL-based desktop personal computer, called the Datapoint 2200, was unveiled in 1970, with cassette tapes for 130KB of mass storage and 8K of internal memory.

The first end user sale was to a chicken farmer in the South who programmed the CTC2200 to write payroll checks. So I you could say a chicken farmer was the first  user of a programmable microcomputer.

The CTC 2200 is densely packed with Small Scale Integrated circuits and other parts. The mechanical design seems to be well done and the unit is solid and sturdy. ( also very heavy )

The design includes about 100 small scale integrated circuits along with discrete components- transistors - resistors -diodes and capacitors. In this photo you can see 4 printed circuit boards under the display and in back of the keyboard.  Their are 4 printed circuit boards under the tape deck area and 4 memory boards next to the CRT display.

The unit was designed to fit in the same area as an IBM Selectric Typewriter. This did not give much room and the unit is packed with cards and circuits.

Here you see the large heat sink on the back of the terminal. It is heavy and weighs about 40 lbs.

The 4 memory cards each contain 4Kb of RAM for a total of 16 Kb. The CTC2200 machines with 16Kb sold for $16,000.

The unit had  2 read-write cassette decks for 130KB of mass storage.

The only serial number I have found so far is 498 on the corner of this card.

Short story about the origin of the Intel 8008 microprocessor.

The Teletype was the communications terminal used from the late 50's until in the 80s - first as a data  terminal connected to the telephone system with a modem. It was used to send messages to users and mostly for sending and receiving telegrams. Later the Teletype was used for a minicomputer printer and paper tape punch to store the data.  Long distant voice calling  were so expensive and unreliable it was rarely used  in the 50's and 60s'.

The Teletype was a totally mechanical device that could decode 8 bit data strings - ASCII code - and print all capital letters on paper & also punch paper tape for permanent Storage of the data. The Teletype could also read the paper tape and convert the code into the 8 bit serial ASCII data for transmitting over a telephone line using a modem. The word Byte for 8 bits of data most likely came from this sending and receiving alphabetic characters as 8 bits of data.

The Teletype was a great invention however it was a mechanical monster with 100's of cams and levers that could and failed often. It was a mechanical device and very noisy & distracting in and office.

In the end of 1960's, 2 graduates at Case Western Reserve University in Ohio, Harry Pyle and Victor D. Poor, came up with the idea of a high density integrated circuit which would be programmable. Harry and Victors ideas were used to create the logic of the CTC2200 and this became the code for the 8008 microprocessor. When transistors and more importantly integrated circuits became available and all electronic version of the Teletype became possible.

The Computer  Terminal Corporation produced an electronic replacement for the Teletype the "CTC 2200". The CTC 2200 was actually programmable terminal using a custom designed 8 bit computer. The computer was made from discrete components and and small scale integrated  circuits. Microprocessors had not been  designed in the late 60's when the CTC2200 was developed.

The engineers at CTC did have the idea to put the computer logic they had designed into the CTC2200 on a single chip  - making a microprocessor.  A design team went to Intel to have them design and make a microprocessor  using the logic in the CTC2200. Robert Noyce of Intel when approached with this project did not like the idea as he thought a computer on a chip would hurt the memory chip market of Intel by competing with computer makers using the Intel memory chips.  However Robert Noyce did agree to make the chip for $50,000.

The CTC engineers also went to Texas Instruments and ask them to make the same chip to be sure they had a backup source.  The Texas Instrument chip did not function properly and was not used. The Intel chip was a long time in development. The CTC team decided to just build the 2200 terminal with there current design of about 100 small scale integrated circuits and give up the rights to the intellectual property rights for the   Intel microprocessor design --and did not pay the $50,000 to Intel.  Giving up the intellectual rights to the microprocessor is among the worst business decisions ever.

Intel went ahead with the full development of the microprocessor and called it the 8008. The microprocessor used the same digital logic and operational software codes as CTC2200 .

The computer logic in the CTC2200 then was an original 8 bit computer that used the 8008 software code and was  the beginning  of 8 bit computers (8008 microprocessor) for Intel.

I  remember for many years I did not think I would find a CTC2200 and wanted to have one for it is one of the first programmable microcomputers. During the late 80's I was able to find not only this fine example and the source also had a  model the CTC1100. The CTC 2200 and 1100 now are part of the "Bugbook Historical Microcomputer Collection"

It was a real pleasure to have Bob Barnett from the "Living Computer Museum" visit our museum May 27/28.

More work for museum curator!!
My wife Gaynell and I own Chantilly Farm & major events for 3 continuous weekends have made for busy, but fun times.

We finished the day with dinner at our home and a visit to our "Bugbook Microcomputer Museum" warehouse.

We had a great time sharing stories about the early microcomputer days late into the night. Bob stayed overnight at our home and headed back to Oregon the next day.



I  have not made a new post the past 2 weeks as we have been very busy with events at our Chantilly Festival Farm and the museum.

May and June are intense for my wife and I -- Two day "Bluegrass and BBQ Festival' May 22/23, Bob Barnett's visit May 27'28, Three day "Floyd Auto Fair" May 29/30/31, "Southern Gospel Show" June 6th (We skip this and our wonderful staff will do all the work) and we are going to our twin granddaughter's High School graduation in Maryland - 

The Festivals at our Chantilly Farm are a lot of fun and lots of work for us and our staff + 40 or so volunteers.  Below I posted a few picture of these events.

A big honor for our Chantilly Farm Venue - The Farm was designated an "Affiliate Crooked Road Venue" during a special ceremony at the Bluegrass Festival.  The Crooked Road is the State official - Virginia's Heritage Music Trail.

Vintage Computer Univac 8008 Microcomputer - Craig Solomonson collection

Craig Solomonson and I had our first correspondence 20 years ago when he offered me one of his Apple-1 computers. I did not purchase that one and it sold recently to Marco Boglione for  $216,000. Craig bought that one from the original owner in Great Falls, Montana and later sold it to a collector in California for $25,000. He in turn sold it on eBay for $50,000 and then it went to Italy.

The Univac 8008 computer Craig has is rare and is most likely the only one in any collection.

David, we corresponded a bit a few years ago about an early Intel SIM8-01 micro system that I had. It seemed to be a relative to your MCB8-10 system. Well, I finally found out the story behind my system….

Univac 8008 microcomputer
It was built by the Univac R&D Division in St. Paul, Minnesota in 1972. They were carefully monitoring the developments at Intel with regard to their 4004 and 8008 microprocessors being developed. Part of their research was to construct actual computer systems to research and then build an application using the 8008. They started by building a 4-bit system similar to the one I have using the SIM4-01 and MP7-01 boards. That unit was completed and being demonstrated by March of 1972. They ordered the 8-bit system (SIM8-01 and MP7-02) when it was announced in April of 1972 and construction took place during the summer of 1972. Univac designed and built their own interfaces for these systems and used a Teletype for I/O. The Univac 8008 "8-Bit Micro Computer System" in my collection was complete and being demonstrated to various Univac divisions and military organizations by early fall of 1972.

I visited with one of the Univac engineers that did some of the programming and he said that only very simple programs were used in demonstrations--like doing simple math operations or it asked for your name, you typed it in on the teletype and it printed some phrase using your name.

Univac spared no expense in developing this system as seen in the construction and fabrication of the cases which are thick, deep red translucent plastic. Not only is it a very aesthetically designed, but it has to be one of the very first 8-bit computers fully assembled and operational.

That system has always fascinated me and I figured it had to be one of the earliest 8-bit systems ever assembled. I have gone through several boxes of Univac Engineer log books in the Charles Babbage Institute archives, but so far have not found a log book for the development of this computer. I know that Univac ordered the boards as soon as they were announced and the SIM8-01 board in the computer is a very early one. I also know that it was done and being programmed in the fall of 1972. However, that engineer could not remember when it was actually completed. I think that the engineer who did the actual design and circuitry for the interface is still alive and living in Minnesota, but he will not respond to phone calls or emails. Hopefully I will find another engineer on the project that might remember more details and hopefully dates.

Now he has a good idea about the origin and the very interesting history about the computer. These very first microcomputer systems are important to preserve and make known to the interested public.

N4USA Amateur Radio Station at the Chantillly Farm

Chantilly Farm and Campground in Floyd Virginia just a few minutes from the Blue Ridge Parkway (MP150). Ham Radio operators are welcome to operate at the campground.

Chantilly Campground is Ham friendly with Amateur Radio Station in our Campground office and many location with trees or other structures making it very easy to put up a wire antenna at a good height. The radio background noise extremely low as we are in a rural area with no industrial noise and very few close neighbors. QRP operators love this location. WiFi is available from most locations on our 200 acres. It is a delight to operate from Chantilly. 

David KK4WW Curator of N4USA and owner of  Chantilly Campground has been a ham operator for 62 years makes this comment  "this is the best radio location I have ever operated from". We are in Floyd County, Virginia the Heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. Ham operators love our 2500 foot  mountain top location for operating DX.  VHF/UHF operators have wonderful propagation up and down the East Coast.

Our camping guest can chose full service RV camping or tent camping at most any location on our 200 acres.  Some primitive tent location have ac power. We are open all year "Weather permitting"

Floyd County VA has many other interesting events and activities that the whole family can enjoy. The area is known for its many musicians and artist. Every week their are numerous music events within the county.  A number of art galleries and studio's are open 12 months of the year. Other activities include hiking, mountain biking, Blue water canoeing & kayaking, visiting organic farms and much more. You may want to visit Chantilly Farm during a weekend we have a music or other event at our farm. Check out this list of activities visit Floyd Virginia .

Gaynell & David Larsen and Dee Wallace are also the Directors of "The Foundation for Amateur International Radio Service" (FAIRS).  FAIRS mission is "International Goodwill though Amateur Radio". N4USA amateur radio station is located about 6 miles from the the town of Floyd VA  at Chantilly Farm. The operation from the farm is excellent with no industrial noise and on a mountain ridge at 2600 feet in the heart of the Blue Ridge Mountains. The beam antenna at N4USA Chantilly is on a 35 foot crank up tower and works very good. A G5RV is used for other hf bands and several UHF/VHF antenna's & transceivers are part of the station. We have many tall trees making it easy to put up wire antennas for field day or camping style operation.  Here is an Ariel video of our 200 acres.

FAIRS was formed as an Amateur Radio nonprofit in 1992 after a trip to the Soviet Union in October of 1990. The 11 FAIRS founders realized that a group of amateur radio hams had no recognition or ability to function at high government levels & applied for the nonprofit charter. Dave KK4WW shown here with Vlad Goncharsky (RT) U5WF. Vald was FAIRS member #3 and a very good friend until his death several years ago.  FAIRS members made about 20 visits to the former Soviet Country Ukraine from 1990 to 2007.  Amateur radio projects are still on going by FAIRS in Ukraine by Victor Goncharsky US5WE.

I was fortunate to  have funds to take a professional film maker on one of our Ukraine/Russia visits in 1992. Jerry Shelor (Film Maker from Virginia Tech) and our group carried 400lbs of video equipment  (AN Iphone would do the job today) on this trip of 4 weeks.  Jerry made a wonderful documentarty of that trip and you can see it here "FAIRS in the former Soviet Union" CLICK

The Floyd County Amateur Radio Society members have installed a very nice hf  UHF & Vhf station at the school. The antennas are on the roof of the school and it is a nice location to operate from with good signals.

FAIRS operates from the Caribbean Island of Dominica as J79USA. Various grants of funds and equipment have been made to the amateur operators of Dominica during the past 18 years.

Here is a fish of gratitude for donating a computer to a fishing village project. We ate the fish and it was very good with the Caribbean spices. Yum Yum.

Vintage Computers - What is in a Name - How we named the "Bugbook Historical Microcomputer Museum"

Why we call our museum the "Bugbook Historical Microcomputer Museum"  - here is the short story.

I call our museum  "The Bugbook Historical Microcomputer Museum"  is because of the original  "Bugbooks" . About 1974 I was part of a team that produced these books. The first two Bugbooks were written and published by Professor Rony and I.  I named the books Bugbooks because the small digital integrated circuits looked like a bug with its legs.  Professor Rony typed the manuscripts and we self published the first few printings of the "Bugbooks" These books were the start of a book series called "The Blacksburg Continuing Education Series" .  The books covered various topics of digital electronics, computers and software. Dr. John Titus and Dr. Chris Titus joined the group and became important members of our team.

During the period 1974 to 1984 about 75 books were published with a circulation of over 1 million copies.  Our team hired 31  authors to help write books in the series. In addition to the books our team designed several computers and other teaching / engineering aids that were sold world wide. John Titus was the computer designer and I designed the digital engineering  / teaching hardware aids. Most or the books were published and marketed by "Howard W Sams" and the hardware was marked by "E and L Instruments" in Derby Connecticut.  Many engineers, technicians and  electronic hobbyist of the late 70's and 80s used  these books and hardware.  All the books and

folks visiting the museum is - I  learned digital electronics from the "Bugbooks".  The experience with the Blacksburg Group started my interest in collecting microcomputer memorabilia for 40 years and has resulted in the thousands of items collected and the small display in the museum. The Bugbook story involves many relationships, interesting events and eclectic people.  It is my  intent to get the details of these adventures in writing -- soon I hope.
